The definition of a rubber bearing is a device that allows constrained relative movement between two components-rotational or linear movement. The basic purpose of bearings is to reduce friction and wear between rotating parts, which are in contact with each other in any type of mechanism. Bearings are roughly divided into several categories according to their allowable movement and working principle. Each type of bearing has a different purpose. Bearings are made of various materials, but rubber is a material that is widely required for making bearings. Facts have proved that rubber is an excellent bearing material, especially when there may be abrasives in the lubricant. The rubber used to make bearings is a tough, elastic compound whose texture is similar to that of car tires.
Sliding and laminated elastic bearings: Neoprene and natural rubber compounds used in the construction industry. Laminated rubber bearings provide the simplest isolation method and are most suitable for high-frequency ground motions.
High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB): This is the ideal choice for seismic isolation. They are rigid in the vertical direction, capable of supporting vertical gravity loads, and elastic in the lateral direction, which allows large horizontal displacements. In fact, during an earthquake, the ground is allowed to move back and forth on the isolated foundation, leaving the building “stationary.” These HDRB mounts are flexible and have the ability to absorb energy. The rubber bearing isolation system partially reflects and partially absorbs some seismic input energy. By using the seismic isolation of HDRB rubber bearings, structural and non-structural damage can also be greatly reduced.
Low damping rubber bearings: Different types of rubber bearings are designed and used together with dampers in the seismic isolation system. The system commonly used in buildings is a low-damping elastic or rubber bearing. These rubber bearings are widely accepted because of their long life, economy, and better control of dynamic properties.
Lead rubber bearing (LRB): Lead rubber bearing is a larger laminated bearing, which is made by sandwiching a rubber layer and a steel layer. There will be a solid lead “plug” in the middle of the bearing. The top and bottom of the lead rubber bearing are equipped with steel plates, which are used to fix the bearing on the building through its foundation. The design of the lead rubber bearing is that the bearing has rigidity and strength in the vertical direction and elasticity in the horizontal direction. Lead as the center of the LRB can disperse the energy of an earthquake, while rubber reinforced with steel plates helps to provide stability, support the structure and isolate vibrations.
The performance of the natural rubber bearing of the steel ring damper (NRB-SRD). These types of dampers are integrated by multiple steel rings, and they are considered to have two configurations. That is, the continuous steel ring damper and the separate steel ring damper are inserted between the top plate and the bottom plate. The performance characteristics of the system, such as effective horizontal stiffness, energy dissipation, equivalent viscous damping, and residual deformation, are calculated. Then with high damping rubber bearings and shape memory alloy (SMA)-lead rubber bearings (SMA-LRB). The results show that the energy dissipation in the steel ring is mainly based on the plastic deformation caused by the bending behavior of the ring. Compared with SMA-LRB and HDRB, NRB-SRD shows better performance in terms of energy dissipation. These additional dampers exhibit higher stability and energy dissipation at low shear strains. Because the connection between the structure and the substructure has ideal initial stiffness under weak earthquake and wind loads. And due to higher energy dissipation, stability and secondary hardening, it shows higher stability and energy dissipation under higher shear strain.
