Maintenance Of Engine Cylinder

For heavy-duty trucks, the maintenance of diesel engine cylinder blocks is essential, which can extend the service life of the cylinder blocks.

  • For different seasons, maintenance varies. Before starting the truck, the diesel engine must be filled with sufficient coolant to avoid starting without water. Do not add cold water when the body temperature is too high to prevent it from cracking.
  • Pay attention to water (or add antifreeze) during outdoor low-temperature parking in winter to prevent it from freezing and cracking; the vehicle must be operated at a specified temperature, and cooling water is indispensable to prevent the engine from being too cold or overheating; before starting, check the oil level and the amount of oil reach the scale specified on the oil dipstick, add or replace if necessary; engine maintenance must strictly abide by the operating procedures to avoid undue human damage.
  • At the same time, the maintenance of the engine cylinder gasket is also very important. The engine cylinder gasket is mainly used to ensure the sealing between its block and  head joint surface to prevent air leakage and water leakage. However, because the cylinder gasket directly contacts the high temperature and high pressure gas, it is easy to be ablated during use, especially around its mouth curling. Once its gasket is burned, the working condition of the engine will be seriously deteriorated, and it is also easy to cause failure or damage of other related parts.

The general reasons for cylinder gasket damage are as below:

  1. Its gasket is not installed evenly on the joint surface of its block and head.
  2. Its head is warped and deformed, its block is too uneven and the cylinder head is loosened, resulting in a leaky seal.
  3.  Improper driving operation method, accustomed to violently increasing the accelerator, rapid acceleration, and high-speed running. Excessive pressure aggravates the broken of its gasket.
  4. Its gaskets are of poor quality and have uneven thickness; there are air bubbles in the mouth of the bag, uneven laying of asbestos or not tight hemming, etc.

How to maintain engine cylinders

  1. Check the surface of its head gasket for depressions, bumps, damage, etc.; check whether the flatness of the cylinder head and cylinder body meets the requirements, and then clean its head gasket, head, body, and blow them dry with high-pressure air to avoid dirt.
  2. The selected its head gasket must be the original parts that meet the requirements (specifications and models) with reliable quality. When installing, pay attention to its up and down direction marks to prevent reverse installation and avoid man-made failures.
  3. Tighten its head bolts according to the technical specifications. As the center extends symmetrically to the two ends, the bolts are tightened to the specified torque 2 to 4 times; it is more reliable to tighten it once in the hot state.
  • Therefore, when replacing its head gasket, you must be patient and careful to operate strictly in accordance with the technical standards, especially in strict accordance with the order, tightening torque and tightening methods specified by the engine manufacturer to tighten its head bolts. 
  • Only in this way can the high-quality seal of its head gasket be guaranteed. Avoid brutal operation to effectively extend the service life of its head gasket.

What aspects should be paid attention to in daily maintenance?

1. It clearance measurement
  • When measuring the cylinder clearance, it is not possible to measure in the direction of the piston skirt perpendicular to the piston pin hole, but in other directions. When measuring, the gap in the direction of the long axis of the ellipse shall prevail, so that the measurement is more convenient and accurate.
  • Moreover, in the reciprocating motion, the direction of the piston skirt perpendicular to the piston pin hole is greatly worn due to the action of lateral pressure. Therefore, when measuring its clearance, the piston skirt should be measured in the direction perpendicular to the piston pin hole.

2. Its liner and piston should be installed after selection
  • When replacing the cylinder liner and piston, it is considered that the new its liner and piston are standard parts, which are interchangeable and can be used after they are installed. In fact, the dimensions of its liner and the piston have a certain tolerance range.
  • If the largest size cylinder liner is matched with the smallest size piston, the matching clearance will be too large, resulting in weak compression and difficulty in starting. In addition, when each it is installed with the its liner and piston of the same group code, it is necessary to check the clearance of its plug before installation. In order to ensure the assembly standard, a test should be carried out before installation to prevent the installation of fake and inferior products.
3. Grease the cylinder head gasket.
  • Butter is a commonly used lubricating grease in the repair of construction machinery, which can play the role of lubrication and sealing. Therefore, some repairmen will apply a layer of butter on its head gasket when installing its head gasket, thinking that this can increase the diesel engine of sealing. As everyone knows, doing so affects the working performance of the diesel engine. The cylinder gasket is the most important seal between its block and  head of the diesel engine. It can not only seal the high temperature and high-pressure gas generated in the cylinder, but also seal its head and block.
  • Therefore, when disassembling and assembling its head gasket, special attention should be paid to its sealing quality. If grease is applied to its head gasket during installation, when its head bolts are tightened, a part of the grease will be squeezed into the cylinder water passages and oil passages and remain in it
  • When it is working, due to the influence of high temperature, part of the butter between the gaskets will flow into it for combustion, and the other part will remain on the joint surface of its block and head, resulting in a gap between its gasket, head and the plane of the body. High-pressure gas is easy to get from here impacting its head gasket, destroying the cylinder head gasket, and causing air leakage. In addition, the butter will produce carbon deposits under high temperatures for a long time, resulting in premature aging and deterioration of its head gasket. Therefore, do not apply grease butter when installing its head gasket.
